Windows Operating System is a software program that
enables the computer hardware to communicate and operate with the computer software. Any desktop or laptop PC normally
comes pre-loaded with Windows XP. Macintosh computers come pre-loaded with OS X. Many corporate servers use the
Linux or UNIX operating systems. The operating system (OS) is the first thing loaded onto the computer. Without
a computer Operating System a computer would be useless. |

OPERATING SYSTEM TYPES
Computers have progressed and developed greatly, every year new and more powerful models are introduced into the
market. Operating systems are also developing rapidly and new types of operating systems are available to challenge
the market leaders.
Basically, each operating system is optimized for a certain type of computer and hardware but will also perform
well in other types of configurations.
The following list of the different types of operating systems with a few examples is a very basic and only meant
to give a general outline.
GUI
Short for Graphical User Interface a GUI Operating System contains graphics and icons and is commonly navigated
using by using a computer mouse. See our GUI dictionary definition for a complete definition.

A multi-user Operating System allows for multiple users to use the same computer at the same time and/or different
