LAN (Local Area Network)

LAN is a network connecting computers in a relatively small area such as a building. SO, LAN is a data communications system netwrok confined to a limited geographic area (up to 6 miles or about 9.6 kilometers) with moderate to high data rates (100 kbps to 1000 Mbps). The area served may consist of a single building, a cluster of buildings, or a campus-type arrangement. The network uses some type of switching technology and does not use common carrier circuits (although it may have gateways or bridges to other public or private networks). LAN allows any connected device to interact with any other on the network.

Line break

A special character that forces a new line on a page without creating a new paragraph.

Line Driver

A DCE device that amplifies a data signal for transmission over cable for distances beyond the RS-232 limit of 50 feet, even up to several miles. Also called "limited-distance modem" (LDM) or "short-haul modem" (SHM).

Link

1. Link is a communications circuit or transmission path connecting two points.
2. A link is text or a graphic that has been formatted to include the location of a document or graphic. When a user clicks a link, the new document or graphic displays.

Logical disk organization
Logical disk organization is a system how the operating system organizes the data stored on a disk. Because the data can be anywhere on the surface of the disk, the operating system must construct a bookkeeping system that allows it to keep track of where the data is. The operating system constructs directories and indexes describing what's occupied, what's free, and what parts should never be used due to physical damage. This type of disk information is called the logical format. The file allocation table used to organize the FAT file system and the master file table used to organize the NTFS file system are part of the logical disk organization. Compare to physical disk organization.

Logic operator
An instruction in a program in which the quantity being operated on and the result of the operation each can have one of two values. Logic operators include AND, OR, NAND, EXCLUSIVE OR, and NOR.

Loopback

A diagnostic test in which the transmitted signal is returned to the sending device after passing through all or part of a data communications link or network. A loopback test compares the returned signal with the transmitted signal.

Lost clusters / Lost Cluster Chain
Lost clusters are units of disk space that the FAT (File Allocation Table) indicates are in use, yet are not accounted for by any directory entries on the disk. Usually these clusters represent garbage on the disk left over from when programs stop unexpectedly. On rare occasions, however, lost clusters may contain valuable data. Lost Cluster Chain is a cluster on disk that is not registered as free, but does not have any known data in it.
