Gateway

A kind of "go-between" device or program that passes information between networks that normally couldn't communicate. What used to be called a gateway is now called a router.

GDI (Graphics Device Interface)
For Windows 9x: Interface that supports Windows' graphical capabilities, including fonts, drawing primitives, and color management. Windows includes three main subsystems: the kernel, graphics device interface (GUI), and User resources.

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format )

Developed by Compuserve using compression technology from Unisys. On the World Wide Web pictures and graphics you see on Web pages are usually in GIF format because the files are small and download quickly.

Gigabit Ethernet

Gigabit Ethernet is an Ethernet protocol that raises the transmission rates to 1 Gbps (gigabits per second). It is primarily used for a high speed backbone of a network.

Gigabyte (GB)

Gigabyte is one billion bytes of information or one thousand megabytes.

Gopher

The Internet protocol where files are displayed in a hierarchical menu and are retrieved based on user input (gopher://). An information search and retrieval tool used mostly for research. Gopher information is stored hierarchically on computers across the Internet. It uses a simple protocol that allows a client to access information from a multitude of numerous Gopher servers at one time, creating what's known as "gopher space". The most common search tools in gopher are Veronica and Jughead. Gopher clients exist for most platforms.

GPL (General Public License)

The licenses for most software are designed to take away the freedom to share and change it. By contrast, the GNU General Public License is intended to guarantee the freedom to share and change free software and to make sure the software is free for all its users. This General Public License applies to most of the Free Software Foundation's software and to any other program whose authors commit to using it. (Some other Free Software Foundation software is covered by the GNU Lesser General Public License instead.) It is possible to be applied it to own programs, too.

Ground Loop

An unwanted continuous ground current flowing between two devices that are at different ground potentials.
